2016 with the dingus we call Louis the Weim

posted in: Adventures | 2

In 2016 Kyle and I decided to get our first ‘big’ dog and it’s been a pretty epic journey with Louis our Weimaraner. Kyle has never had his own dog before so this was a good time. We took our time to research and learn about breeds that would be compatible with our mutts, Buttons and Pepper (they were around first).

Being rescues, they’re set in their strange ways – Buttons has a pretty relaxed personality but Pepper is dominant, jealous and overwhelming. She can be quite the dickhead. From staring at your for no good reason to stealing anything we give Buttons … and Buttons just lets her. We found the Weimaraner a fitting and tolerant personality and got extremely lucky when we found Louis. He was born on 28 January 2016, in Cape Town, and we brought him home when he was around eight weeks old.

What a funny character with the weirdest and sweetest personality. Louis was named after the father of microbiology, Louis Pasteur – can you tell Kyle named him? Louis’ mom is a black Weim and his father is a grey ghost, a typical olive Weimaraner – they call his colouring ‘grey ghost’ and they have blue eyes that turn into a yellow/grey colour. Since Kyle was away during the day, and couldn’t see what Louis got up to, I decided to create an Instagram account for @louistheweim. Here are some highlights of our year with Louis, Buttons and Pepper.

LOUIS THE (OUR) WEIMARANER (@LOUISTHEWEIM)

Let’s start from the very beginning.

1. He was way tiny. He likes to mimic us, still does as an adult and helped me pull masking tape off the walls when I was busy with DIY. Here was the first time he learnt how to stay and come on command (in Chinese-Mandarin of course).

– –

2. Louis liked to stick his tongue out.

– –

3. He still does.

– –

4. He likes Buttons the most since Pepper took longer to warm up to him.

– –

5. He likes her a lot.

– –

6. So much that we feel sorry for her.

– –

7. He always looks startled and enjoys his naps on any couch (we hear it’s weim thing).

Here’s another couch picture. And another one. Okay one more.

– –

8. He likes to be around us, all the time, I can’t even water the plants without him harassing me.

– –

9. Now we know what velcro dog means.

– –

10. People find it odd but he (just like B & P) enjoys snacking on fruit and veg. We think it’s because I snack on fruit and veg and he just wants in. Here’s Louis snacking on watermelon, frozen yogurt, celery, carrot and biltong.

– –

11. Louis is extremely thoughtful. He doesn’t jump into things without analysing the situation first.

– –

12. Like bird watching.

– –

13. Speaking of bird watching. He has a huge crush on Maggie Lawson.

– –

14. He loves toys. From R50 to R350, he can destroy anything.

– –

15. Yup, anything … this was just six hours later.

Well that was fun… #weimcrime #doglife #weimaranerpuppy #weimlife #weim #dogtoys #westpawdesign

16. We realised he equally enjoys mulching a cardboard box. Here’s what happens after a good mulching session.

Finished 1, Finished 2, Finished 3. Cardboard rolls/tubes are also welcome.

– –

17. He’s just a giant baby. Almost one year old now and still a baby.

2016 was fun – lots of bruises, head butts, swollen lips and the funniest memories thanks to this dingus.

This was amazing. I’ve never seen someone do one of these before. You have very nice dogs. They are all beautiful. Your weim has a very unique personality as do most weims. Thanks so very much for sharing with us. Hope you all have a fabulous year!
